Chapter 9
I feel like I’m back on solid ground once I’m in my apartment with the door locked behind me. I turn on the lamps in the living room and the television for background noise.
I dropped and abandoned my things in the doorway and now I’ve wrapped myself in a blanket and am curled up on the couch. I’m staring at the television but not seeing anything. At first my eyes just water and the picture swims in front of my eyes. Within seconds the tears are streaming down my face.
There are so many reasons that I’m crying. First of all, I hate that rude bitch. Second, how could I have been such a fool to think I meant something to Nate? I should have known that the conquest was the most intriguing part for him.
But most of all, I hate that my friends were right. Kristi told me from the beginning that he’s not the type of guy for me. Maria knew right off the bat that I had been incredibly stupid and was going to get my heart broken. I guess they were right. It was stupid of me to think a guy like Nate would ever really care about a girl like me.
After about a half hour of staring at the television without seeing a thing, I decide to get up and run myself a bubble bath. I run the risk that this bath will remind me of how amazing the bath was yesterday, as well as my time with him, but I’m going to have to take the chance. Besides, I don’t know if I want to forget our time together.
I think about calling Maria while I run my fingers under the water testing the temperature but I don’t want to hear her tell me, “I told you so.” I have to find a way to turn off all the thoughts in my mind.
The bubble bath helps. I relax and sink down until only my head is above the bubbles. I can even feel myself dozing off. Feeling calm enough that I think I’ll actually be able to go to bed, I’m about to pull myself out of the tub when I hear a loud banging coming from my front door.
I sit up straight in the tub and grip the sides. Only a few seconds pass when the banging starts again…and it’s loud.
“Jesus,” I say to myself, getting out of the tub and wrapping myself in a towel. I’m walking out of the bathroom when I hear yelling accompanying the pounding.
“Leah! Open the door.” It’s Nate. I freeze for a second, trying to decide if it’s a good idea to open the door or not. But he makes the decision for me when he starts banging again. Worried that the neighbors are going to call the police, I angrily stomp to the door and whip it open.
“Christ, Nate, I have neighbors, you know.”
He storms past me, walking right into the living room. I peek my head out of the door to make sure no one is investigating the noise and then quickly close it behind me.
